Postcards of Narvik and surrounds

Narvik , situated above the Artic  Circle.  Scene of the first big sea battle and victory  for  Brittain in WW2. Narvik a very strategic place for the Germans, because of ready  access to the Swedish mines. So although Norway declared themselves neutral within a few days of WW2  starting  it didn't take long for the Germans to begin showing an interest in the area & therefore England understanding the strategic importance  soon moved themselves into place. A fierce battle with the French, Poles and English fighting the Germans. Many  thousands loosing their lives. So although the allies won the big battle the Germans ended up taking over Norway for the duration of the war. 10's of thousands of Yougoslav, German & Norwegian prisoners died in work camps,
Narvik still the sea port for shipping out iron ore from Sweden,  in fact the only rail connection for Narvik is to Sweden,  ( 24 hours to Stockholm, )
Our last day in Narvik was spent at the Narvk war museum , and then a drive down to  Beisfjord just south of Narvik
New bridge being built across Narvik fjord,  they need very calm weather to operate the huge crane that lifts the span sections in place.
