Helsinki

Helsinki,  capital of Finland. Founded in 1550 by the Swedish King Vasa, idea was that it was to be a rival to the Hansa town of Tallinn.
 Russians took control of Finland in 1809 and  that is when in 1812  Helsinki was  made capital as they wanted a capital nearer St Petersburg.
Finland got its independence on 6th Dec 1917
Soviet Finish border conflicts 1918 to 1922
Another war with Russia  this one called The Winter War 1939 /40
Continuation War fought along side the Germans against the Russians 1941 to 1944
Since then relative peace.

Fantastic public transport system around Helsinki that we made great use of.

The best Bouillabaisse I have ever tasted, bought at the old  markets hall from Soppakeittiö


Helsinki they have turtles as bollards to stop cars on predestrian areas


 Temppellaukion Kirkko. Went to a wonderful concert at this church. Has been dug down into the rock .
